When it comes to auto insurance, there are 3 major types that you should be aware of: liability, collision and comprehensive insurance.
Liability insurance is the minimum amount of coverage that is required by California law. It will cover the medical costs of the people that were involved in an accident with you when you are at fault up to the limits that you have chosen. It will also pay for the repairs to their car or property. When you are deciding how much coverage you want, it’s important to keep in mind the cost of replacing a car, and the fact that medical costs can be very expensive. Additional coverage can add on as a little as a few dollars per month to your policy, but potentially save you thousands in the end. Our experts will help ensure you are choosing the best coverage for you.
Collision insurance will protect your car in the event of an accident. Where liability insurance covers you for someone else’s vehicle or property, collision insurance will cover your car if it gets damaged or stolen. This will also cover you if the other party is at fault, but are uninsured or underinsured and you don’t have the necessary funds to repair your car. Unlike liability, collision isn’t required by law.
Just like its name implies, collision insurance is your security blanket if you get into a car accident and your car needs repair. Since state laws mandate that every auto on the road be covered by liability insurance, the odds that you will need collision have gone down considerably, and therefore, so have the prices for this type of insurance. Collision insurance only kicks in to pay for your vehicle damage if you are at fault in an accident in another car, (your liability insurance pays for their repairs and expenses, while your collision insurance will pay for yours), or if you are involved in an accident that is you’re your fault and the other driver does not have insurance or you cannot collect from it for whatever reason. Collision is another type of insurance that is not mandated by state law, but may be required by your auto loan lender or car leasing company.
Comprehensive insurance is any incidents that would be outside a typical car accident. If you are car is stolen, comprehensive insurance would cover that damages. Also if your car is damaged in a hit and run while it’s parked comprehensive coverage would cover the damages as well. Having comprehensive means that pretty much no matter what happens to your car, your car will be covered.
